Chapter Twenty-Three

Allie’s phone rang as she was climbing into the truck in the driveway of the Krafts’ home. It was an unknown number, but she guessed it might be Darius.

“Hello?” she answered.

“Allie. Got a minute?”

She was right. “For you? Anytime,” she said.

Darius chuckled. “Be careful with vague statements like that,” he said. “I got the tox report back.”

“And?” Allie asked.

“Confusing,” he said. “Not the typical substances you might suspect would be injected into someone to cause death. There may have been some type of organic coagulant. I have some theories as to what it might be, and I’m going to ask for a more specialized tox screen,” he said.

“So, another round of tests,” Allie said.

“Yep. These just aren’t conclusive. And we may be dealing with not only a murder, but a clever murderer.”

“Huh,” Allie said. “But you’re pretty sure it’s murder?”

“Well,” he said. “I can’t explain why his blood might thicken inside of his skin if he drowned. I think he was helped along. I’m gonna wait for the next round of toxicology reports before I report to the DA and the Chief of Police in Atlantic Beach. However, I believe Ebbie Watkins was helped along with shuffling off this mortal coil.”

“You think someone injected him with something?”

“Certain of it,” he said. “As certain as I can be without that follow-up tox report.”

“How in the world did someone inject him with something when he was seen surfing?” Allie asked.

“That’s not my department.” Darius chuckled. “That’s more up your alley, Allie.”

“Right.” She sighed. “All right, well, let me know when you have a better idea of just what we’re dealing with here.”

“Will do,” he said and hung up the phone.

So, not your typical toxic injectable substances. Not drugs. Not heart medications. Something organic? A clever murderer. I can’t say as I’ve met anyone that would fall in that category.
